"I can use my TV and DVD player in Perth Western Australia?

North America uses NTSC format, which has to do with the number "Lines" are on the screen. Most other countries use PAL … including Australia. Some TVs and VCRs have a button lets you use both, although these systems are more expensive. If your PAL TV and VCR can not see, then, no, you can not use ….. However, when I lived in a country abroad, I took my tape recorder and TV. where Vi VHS (not sure if this works w / DVD, but I guess he does) that were recorded in NTSC, I could see. I could not see anything on TV or DVD, etc, which had been recorded in PAL format.

In this made-for-television Western-drama, Alan Johnson (Christopher Reeve) and Britt Johnson (Tony Todd) are two ranchers living in Texas in the 1860s who are forced to take sides in an ugly domestic situation. Delores Holtz (Cyndy Preston) is the wife of Ralph Holtz (Chris Wiggins), a crude and violent man who mistreats his wife. One day she runs away to take up with Running Dog (Raoul Trujillo), chief of a local Indian tribe. Ralph wants to stage a raid to kill Running Dog and take back his wife, but will Alan and Britt join in or try to stop him? Black Fox: The Price of Peace was a sequel to the earlier TV movie Black Fox, and was later followed by a third film, Black Fox: Good Men and Bad. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Among the most popular TV Western series ever, Bonanza starred Lorne Green as Ben Cartwright and Michael Landon, Dan Blocker and Pernell Roberts as his sons Little Joe, Hoss and Adam. In the episode “Bade Without Honor,” first aired in 1960, a stranger arrives in town; he says he’s a Deputy Marshall and needs Jackson Blaine, a friend of the Cartwrights, to ride with him to San Francisco to testify against the Murdock Gang. Adam, however, insists on going along as he smells a rat. “Badge Without Honor” features guest star Dan Duryea; it’s available on DVD in tandem with “Desert Justice,” and as part of a five-episode box set. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

When his best friend is accused of murder, Gene does his duty and arrests the man–then conducts his own investigation to prove that his pal is innocent. Pat Buttram goes through his usual sidekick paces, while young Autry prot? g? Don Reynolds does some impressive horse-riding stunts. Of interest to TV-western fans is the actor playing Autry’s wrongly accused buddy: it’s none other than Hugh O’Brian, later to gain fame as television’s Wyatt Earp. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

 USED: Hondo [Special Collector's Edition]

USED: Hondo [Special Collector's Edition]

$3.99

Hondo is so “perfect” a John Ford western that many people assume it was directed by John Ford–or at the very least, Andrew McLaglen. Actually the director was suspense expert John Farrow, who worked with the “Duke” only twice in his career (the second film was an oddball war drama, The Sea Chase [55]). In Hondo, John Wayne plays a hard-bitten cavalry scout who is humanized by frontierswoman Geraldine Page and her young son (Lee Aaker, star of TV’s Rin Tin Tin). Try as he might, Wayne can’t convince Page to move off her land in anticipation of an Apache attack. He leaves her ranch, only to be ambushed by desperado Leo Gordon–who happens to be Page’s long-absent husband. Having killed Gordon, Hondo returns to the ranch to protect Page from the Indians, and to rekindle the woman’s hesitant love for him. The climactic attack sequence is enhanced by Hondo’s 3-D photography, one of the few truly effective utilizations of this much-maligned process. Long unavailable thanks to the labyrinthine legal tangles of the John Wayne estate, Hondo was finally released to videotape in the early 1990s. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

 USED: Sabata

USED: Sabata

$8.99

Spaghetti Western fans used to the likes of Django and The Good, The Bad and the Ugly might be taken by surprise when watching Sabata. True, the film does star spaghetti Western star Lee Van Cleef as the tight-lipped hero of the title, but it has a very different feel from the genre’s traditional, Sergio Leone-derived style. Director/co-writer Gianfranco Parolini (alias Frank Kramer) takes things in a direction that seems to fall halfway between The Wild Wild West TV series and a James Bond movie; the film is packed with colorful characters, exotic weapons, and the action scenes that mix wild stunts with pyrotechnics. Parolini appropriately gives the film a light touch, playing up the colorful and humorous aspects while delivering the action. The end result is a little too long for this sort of light material, causing it to drag a bit in the middle, but it is too good-natured and entertaining to dislike. In short, Sabata is likely to make fun viewing for Euro-cult fans and anyone interested in an offbeat Western. ~ Donald Guarisco, Rovi

A gentle film critic hooks up with a violent drifter in this HIV-positive road movie, which marked the emergence of writer/director Gregg Araki into the art house mainstream. Jon (Craig Gilmore) has just learned he has the virus that causes AIDS. Still in a state of shock, he stumbles through his usual routine — until he meets Luke (Mike Dytri), a hunky, gun-toting hitchhiker who has just stolen a car from a pair of homicidal lesbians and shot a trio of would-be gay bashers. Against his better judgment, Jon lets Luke stay at his place and soon finds himself drawn into the nihilistic stranger’s world; it doesn’t hurt that Luke is also HIV-positive and hot to get inside Jon’s pants. Things take a Bonnie and Clyde turn when Luke kills a policeman. The pair go on the lam, first to San Francisco, then all over the western United States. Jon keeps his best friend, Darcy (Darcy Marta), apprised of his situation via a series of ever more infrequent collect calls. But as the road trip continues, Jon becomes increasingly disillusioned with Luke’s belief that since they’re doomed to die, they should lead consequence-free lives. Like Araki’s later movies, The Living End is peppered with pop culture detritus and features a soundtrack heavy on industrial and alternative music — in this case Psychic TV, Coil, and Fred Gianelli. Marta is a veteran of Araki’s earlier Three Bewildered People in the Night, while several other cast members, including Gilmore, would go on to appear in the director’s Totally F***ed Up. The Living End’s many cameos include performance artist Johanna Went, Eating Raoul director Paul Bartel, Warhol associate Mary Woronov, and Peter Grame, star of the obscure European film Das Gluck Beim Haendewaschen. ~ Brian J. Dillard, Rovi
